Making A Burlesque Outfit

Considering getting a burlesque outfit or burlesque costume, well before you go and spend all that hard earned cash, take a look at some of these burlesque ideas they may save you a penny or two, here are some pointers to help you if you are considering making a burlesque costume for a party or just for fun.

1. If you are going to be performing a Burlesque dance you may want to think about the music you will be dancing to, Does the music feature any colours in its lyrics, if so you may want to incorporate those colours into your Burlesque outfit, consider the colours and also which colours you can match with them, remember to add a little contrast.
Also consider the feel of the music you are dancing to if the music is soft then you want to reflect that in your costume

2. Think about the dance you will be performing and how your body moves, consider how your burlesque outfit may stop the flow of movement, you really want an outfit that helps accentuate your dance movements, these are important factors in the designing stage.

3. You may also want to consider if you are performing is the audience you will be performing to, be aware of the rules of the venue, how much will you be revealing or allowed to reveal, this is an important factor, you dont want to spend time designing pieces that will remain unseen

4. Do some research with google or other search engines, look for burlesque costumes, burlesque photos, burlesque outfits, this research will give you some incite to the different styles that you can try and recreate, print out your favourite ones and stick them all on one big sheet of paper your ideas sheet, this can be referred back to and you can use your favourite ideas for your own burlesque look

5. After your research take your ideas sheet and go and rummage through your clothes, before you go out and start buying clothes for your look, take a good look at what you have already available, take your initial burlesque outfit concept idea and see if there is any usable things that you may have already, old shirts blouses, corsets, bra and pantie sets etc.

6. Now if your performing the top layers off clothing you will probably be taking off, try searching charity stores or retro clothing shops for good ideas at cheap prices, depending on how handy you are with altering clothing will depend on how much you can alter stuff you may buy from shops. Remember if you are planning on taking clothes off that these may indeed get ripped in the process, if your wanting to keep the outfit for another time quality stitched clothing is always a good thing to have here

7. Snaps Are a good purchase, pick them up from your local fabric retailer, these snaps or snap tape can be a very handy replacement from having zippers or those uncomfortable hook and eye fasteners

8. You can use fringe, beads, tassles, feather or other similar materials, these can seriously help emphasize the movement of the body, you can attach the fringe in rows on the cup of a bra, you may also want to add a couple of lines of fringe  on either hip perhaps, you could attach the fringe directly onto the underwear or use a ribbon as a belt and attach the fringe to that.
